STOCKINGS WITH CARE

Hi there, we won't be blogging over the weekend because we're working with Stockings With Care. Please contact the organization directly http://www.stockingswithcare.org for more info or if you'd like to help this weekend.

Happy Holidays from BABY DOES ... NYC.

Stockings with Care is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to making sure that families in need have everything they need to create the magic of Christmas morning for their kids. Last year, Stockings with Care played Santa to over 2000 kids. For us, it 's about opening hearts, inspiring dreams and preserving the dignity of parents and their families.
Stockings with Care works with coalitions that assist families either living in homeless shelters or who are in jeopardy of becoming homeless and can not afford to celebrate their holiday. Social workers at each of these coalitions work with the parents to make their wish lists.

These lists are passed on to Stockings with Care. Through the generosity of our individual Santas, private and corporate donors and a small army of volunteers, we make sure that every child gets at least two things on their list and that each child has at least three gifts to open on Christmas morning. Thousands of gifts are wrapped and delivered to the parents, empowering them to create magic for their kids.

Of course, lots of kids ask for what every kids wants - toys. But there are an equal number of requests for life's essentials. Clothes. Books. Strollers, Diapers. One year, a child even asked for dog food so that they didn't have to give up the family dog that they could no longer afford. We delivered a year's supply of dog food.

Stockings With Care was founded in 1992 by Rosalie Joseph and Tom Fontana. And every year since then, sometime in early October, we come together to make this happen. There is no office. There are no salaries. Members have even donated their phone numbers for the two months leading up to the holidays. 100% of the money we raise and 100% of our volunteers' efforts go to our kids.

The term 'subway' is synonymous worldwide with the New York underground rail network. It seemed entirely fitting therefore to produce a celebratory t-shirt depicting the MTA subway. I love the subway in New York. It's an efficient means of affordable travel. So next time you feel like taking a cab, or if you're nervous about reading underground rail maps, just give the MTA subway a ride first.

Our story

Hi I'm Jak Burke and I own Baby Does ... NYC. Formed in February 2007 Baby Does ... NYC is a home grown brand aimed at babies and toddlers up to age 3. We have launched our label using a neighborhood t-shirt range, but in development is a clothes line and an (baby services based) open directory. Our talent is pooled from a small collective of local artisans and we use USA made materials and small businesses.

We are proud to say that our t-shirts are hand-printed in A Bleecker Street studio by http://tinyteedesigns.com. We also believe in community. Baby Does ... NYC annually donates its labor and resources to New York children's charity www.stockingswithcare.org. In addition we partner with urban health community providers and public schools to raise funds for all of New York's children.

So buy one of our Baby Does ... NYC t-shirts and you won't be buying a product sourced abroad, you'll be contributing to our local community of small businesses, artists  and nonprofit organizations.

Thank you for your support and business. Happy holidays!  Jak

WASHINGTON HEIGHTS/INWOOD

Fort Tryon park in Washington Heights was named after the last British governor of New York. This fact alone draws me to it. Centuries before, the Wiechquaesgeck Indians dwelled in nearby caves, feasting on oysters in the summertime.

The surrounding area bears the footprints of successive waves of immigration. The Indian Road, (Indigenous tribes) Bogardus Place, (Colonial Dutch) Fort George Avenue & Hill, (Colonial British) Colonel Robert Magaw Place, (American Revolutionary) Haven Avenue, (Early American) Piotr Pinkhasov Plaza, (Soviet Jewish) and Juan Pablo Duarte Boulevard ( Dominican Spanish). Yet, Fort Tryon Park remains primordial.

On a quiet evening ‘something’ ancient radiates from the rocks. It traverses underground springs and hums along the roots of great trees. Eventually, it finds release in the tinkling leaves. Maybe ‘it’ is the song of Madame Mannahatta herself?

HARLEM

HARLEM certainly existed before the African American exodus from the South. Once it was a rural retreat for the wealthy. Certain street names give this away: Bradhurst Avenue, St. Nicholas Avenue, Morningside Avenue & Park, and Manhattan Avenue.

For me such history is irrelevant. On 125th street stands the restored Apollo Theater. It opened in 1934 and for many years it was the only venue in New York to hire black talent. Close by is the infamous Hotel Theresa people like Louis Armstrong, Josephine Baker, Duke Ellington, Muhammad Ali, and Jimi Hendrix all stayed or lived there.

On this street Malcolm X galvanized his audience and set in motion the Black Power movement. In the year I was born Dr. Martin Luther King was assasinated, 125th street is a Boulevard named in honour of him.

Sometimes I dream about a HARLEM - long-gone during the Harlem Renaissance. There’s a buzz in the night air - the Jelly Roll Blues…..but in reality things are better these days and HARLEM remains – a City unto herself….
