Book ahead: July 4th Events in NYC

Where will your children be for July 4th?

Before we go any further, a brief quiz:
  1. Is it important to you that your kids are in bed before 11:00 pm?
  2. Are your kids willing to spend long periods of time standing or sitting on the ground without complaint? Are you?
  3. Does $90 (per person!) seem like a lot to you to pay to get on a boat with a cash bar?

Simply put, seeing the fireworks in person is probably a better idea in theory than in practice if you have kids, especially small ones. But if you insist, here are your options for where to view them:

1. Standing along the West Side Highway: The fireworks start at 9:00pm, but much like New Year’s Eve in Times Square, you’ll need to camp out ahead of time, preferably no later than 4:00pm or 5:00pm, in order to have a shot at a decent view (the truly dedicated should arrive at 2:00pm, when traffic on the northbound lanes is closed between 22nd and 59th Streets). You can access the highway from points on 11th Avenue at 24th, 26th, 29th, 33rd, 40th, 42nd, 44th, 50th, 52nd, 54th and 56th Streets, but plan for congestion and possible roadblocking by the NYPD, who are on high alert.

Speaking of which, it’s important to note that, for security reasons, no large bags or backpacks will be allowed, and you can’t bring lawn chairs, either (strollers are OK, but due to the sheer crush of people you might want to carry your baby or toddler in a Bjorn or Ergo--start stretching those hamstrings now).

2. On a Harbor Cruise: Many different cruise lines offer 4th of July fireworks viewing. The Circle Line is the cheapest, at $89/person (not including food or drink). If you’re feeling more flush, hop aboard the Shearwater, an 82-foot schooner, for a fully catered dinner and open bar with champagne. Adults are $450, but children 12 and under are free only $350! (Just think of it this way: you’d be paying $100 more per head if they got drunk). If booze cruises send you running for dry land--or Dramamine--consider watching the show from the deck of the USS Intrepid (seats are $160 for ages 3 and up).

3. In Someone’s Hudson River New Jersey Home or High-Rise Manhattan Apartment: No cash bar or motion-sickness AND plentiful plush seating? This is by far the best option. If you have a friend or relative with one of these types of homes, begin sucking up to them immediately.

Thursday Book Review: SWAGGER by Lisa Bloom

The story of Karen Klein, the bullied school monitor, touched the nation's heart-strings and ignited a firestorm of debate about unruly behavior. So I asked Lisa Bloom author of the fantastic book SWAGGER for an interview. The book specifically deals with the issues of anti-social young men today. Scroll down to find the purchase link.

1.  Why are boys particularly discriminated against in our school system?

I wouldn’t necessarily call it discrimination.  I would say that boys tend to be more kinetic, and as we’ve cut physical education and recess and increasingly “teach to the test,” many boys find themselves wiggly, acting up, labeled as “bad,” and feeling as though school doesn’t really welcome their kind.  In addition, parents and teachers have lower expectations for boys’ literacy.  Though the studies show that boys who aren’t reading well by the fourth grade are likely to do poorly in all subjects, drop out of high school, and have a difficult time getting decent jobs, many adults shrug off boys’ school performance as “boys will be boys.”  Lower expectations mean lower achievement, and the cycle continues.

2.  Why did you call the book Swagger?

Because “swagger” is the most popular song lyric in the last decade, across all genres:  rap, hip hop – even the Jonas Brothers are singing about it.  All the boys I interviewed for my book knew all about swagger – they’d laugh and clap each other on the back, puffing up their chests and boast they had more swagger than their buddies.  But parents were mostly ignorant about this phenomenon.

What began as a fun way to boost confidence in boys has morphed into dangerous levels of arrogance.  Our kids are 21st of out 30 developed countries in math scores, for instance, but they are #1 in one area:  confidence!  Many parents unwittingly harm their boys by praising their every breath.  In fact, the latest and best research shows that instilling an air of humility does far more good to your son.  So my first rule for parents is to replace your boys’ swagger with an air of humility, because that will immediately improve his school performance, his emotional health, he’ll be less likely to fight, drink, and do drugs.  That’s a lot of benefit from one little attitude adjustment.

3.  When I (as a female) look around I continue to see males overwhelmingly dominating our culture. (EG: Given that recently a male beat a female to (Democratic) presidency) So where is this male identity crisis? And is this a price females should have to pay?

Men are still doing exceedingly well at the very top:  they dominate as CEOs of Fortune 500 companies, the Supreme Court, Congress.  But few of us live at that pinnacle.  As parents, we are concerned about where our boys are right now, and where they’ll be when they finish school.  And in school and the early stages of employment, boys are being outperformed by girls at a stunning rate.  Girls dominate the top 10% of the class; boys crowd the bottom 10%.  Boys are far more likely to be medicated, disciplined, suspended or expelled.  Girls are more likely to graduate from college, and get the prime jobs in their twenties in major US cities.

And hats off to this generation of girls who has charged through the barriers their mothers knocked down for them.  Girls have this stunning success because they do more homework, have better attendance, are more likely to ask for help, and spend more time on extracurricular activities.  But we cannot allow our boys to slip off the radar.  There is nothing innately male about illiteracy or innumeracy.  At a minimum we all want our sons to have a life where he has meaningful work, he can raise a family, and make a contribution.  And many young men are slipping away from this possibility.

4.  Why are so many young men having a hard time finding jobs?

Because our manufacturing base, which was once a third of our economy, is now only about 5%, and because fewer young men have college degrees than young women.  A college degree is the golden ticket to the middle class today.  (In the book I show parents how to get your son through college.  It can be done.) Sixty per cent of new jobs require it.  Nearly every job requires strong reading, writing and communication skills – skills young women have mastered, and young men struggle with.

5.  You call America "incarceration nation" -- why?

Because we incarcerate more of our own people (93% of our inmates are male) than any other country on earth or in human history, and this mass imprisonment is decimating families, communities, and ultimately, all of us.  When I oppose education cuts, for example, the response is always, “Lisa, we just don’t have the money.”  But it’s a lie.  We do have the money.  We just choose to spend it on other things.  On the federal level, obscene levels of military spending.  On the state level, mass incarceration, to the tune of up to $50,000 per year per inmate.
More prisons are being built every day, waiting to lock up the next generation of American boys.  This is a horrific state of affairs, yet so rarely discussed in our culture.

6.  What are your top 4 tips for parents of boys?

1.    Teach your son to lose the swagger
2.    Make your home a reading mecca
3.    Eliminate the competition (TV, video games, wasted computer time.)
4.    Set college expectations early and often.

Of course, in my book I explain how to do all these!

7)  You speak to the culture of 'thugdom'. Do you believe that this is a socio-economic issue, a racial issue or a generic societal issue? If so, why?

This is a problem for all of us.  Rap and hip hop music are the most popular genres for boys of all classes and races, and the majority of the top selling songs celebrate violence, especially gun violence, rape, including rape of little girls, murdering gay men, and illegal drug use.  I have the lyrics in the book and they are sickening.  In video games, TV and movies most popular with boys, nearly every problem is solved with violence.  Parents must oppose these slick, flashy, seductive messages.  In the book I have suggestions for how to have these important conversations.  Because the good news is that according to kids, parents are still their #1 role models.  So we must speak out loudly and often about our values.

4Better for smaller babies
By JaymesW
I absolutely adored the Baby K'Tan while my son was small. I could carry him around hands-free and he was snug, often just sleeping while I puttered or while we were out and about. I'm so sad that now that he is bigger, I find that my back is starting to hurt when he is in the front-carry positions, and I really just think it's that he is so heavy - 17 pounds at almost 4 months. Now I find that I'm going to my Mei Tai style carrier BabyHawk Mei Tai Organic Baby Carrier Eyes of the World on Avocado Straps and Dainty Baby Reusable Bag Bundle

I have not yet tried the rear carry positions with him, I'm waiting for him to get a little bigger, so I'm hoping to get more use yet.

One note, I'm not a fan of the hip carry position, it just doesn't feel secure to me, even with the extra sash. I think that is typical of the sling style carriers. I've had no issues with the other front carry positions, having the crossed straps and the tie around feels plenty safe.

This carrier washes well and seems to be holding up just fine to wear and tear. I was worried about the light color, but haven't had any issues with staining so far. It's definitely going to be a keeper for Number Two in the future.

5Love my Baby K'tan!
By Avidly Perfecting
I purchased my baby k'tan carrier and have used it several times now. I am too impatient for the manual's multi-step instructions but had no trouble following the very helpful and short videos online. The carrier is extremely soft and my seven month old daughter loves being in it when we go out. It's also breathable which has extremely important for me during our record breaking heat waves this summer. I have not noticed any stretching with mine like someone else mentioned. Even though I am busty and usually size up on things like this, I stuck to their sizing chart and ordered a size small. The size chart was very accurate and the fit is comfortably snug, like a hug. It's the only carrier/sling my daughter didn't fight to get out of and we get lots of compliments when we go out. It does distribute weight evenly, stays supportive of both of us for long periods of shopping, is very comfortable and washable. I haven't talked to anyone who doesn't love theirs; you should definitely try it out!

4Nice sling
By Fitness Swimmer
All in all good product. Purchased for 6.5 lb newborn who was sliding down in other carriers. Now as he is getting bigger it is really nice to have weight distributed on both shoulders. You don't have to fold it or put it on perfectly for it to be usable which is nice. It seems to stretch out after a few wears and become too big but it is minor because you can machine wash and tumble dry to shrink it back up. So far have only used it with the cradle and kangaroo positions. I prefer my hotsling for short trips but this is but better if baby is going to be inside it for any real length of time.

Tuesday Childcare: Smart Sitters

Smart Sitters was founded in 2008 by Melody Rubie a speech therapist and a mom. Here's her story and it may sound familiar:

When my son was born, I didn’t realize I would need a sitter. I was so busy preparing for the birth, tending to my newborn's needs, and getting acclimated to motherhood, that I hadn't thought about who would care for my child when my maternity leave ended. I asked friends for recommendations and, while interviewing numerous candidates, discovered that how a candidate responded to me in an interview was not indicative of how she might respond to my child. I quickly developed a way to refine my interviewing skills to discern the qualities of a child-centric sitter and to conduct effective background and reference checks. Not only did I find excellent care for my son, I also began helping other parents find great sitters, too. Since launching Smart Start Sitters in 2008, I have used my experience to provide hundreds of parents with qualified sitters who have helped their children grow and thrive.

FAQ:

Q. How much control do I have over who will look after my children?
A. Although Smart Start Sitters carefully vets sitters in our Boutique Placement Service, we offer you the opportunity to know more by providing a synopsis of the sitter's resume and references.

Q. Can I interview a potential sitter?
A. Yes, for part-time and full-time nannies. However, we ask that you keep the interview to no more than 1 hour. You may interview up to 2 sitters before making your final decision.

Q. Can your sitter "train" with my current sitter who is leaving the position?
A. Your child's comfort with a Smart Start sitter is our number one priority. In keeping with our "Child First" policy, we offer "sitter training" for families whose current sitter is leaving, whether it's a Smart Start Sitter or your current sitter. However, you are still responsible for paying the trailing sitter, as well as the training sitter, if both are from our service.

Q. If I have a particularly good relationship with a sitter, may I book with them directly?
A. All on-call and temporary bookings are done through the office. We will do our best to enable these relationships, but please call or email the office to book a particular sitter in order to avoid scheduling conflicts.

Q. What if I expect to be home later than the booking time?
A. This applies to on-call and temporary sitters. Please let the sitter know as soon as possible if you will be later than expected. There is no guarantee the sitter will be able to accommodate you if this is a last minute request. If you are more than 15 minutes over your booking time, please pay the sitter an extra half hour of sitting. If you are more than 30 minutes or more over your booking time, please pay the sitter an extra hour of sitting.

Q. What if I only need a sitter for 2 hours?
A. We have a 3 hour minimum per sitting. You may use only 2 hours, but the sitter must be paid the minimum.

Q. Do I have to pay cab fare to the sitter?
A. After 9:00p.m. we require $10.00 in cash to the sitter to help her get home safely.

Q. Are the prices listed on your website the same for every sitting situation?
A. This prices listed on the website are for residential sitting here in NYC. If you need a sitter for your hotel stay, special event, overnights, travel with family, or child with special needs, please call us for pricing.

Q. Do you take credit cards?
A. Yes. However, we only accept Visa and Master Card.

Q. Do you take personal checks?
A. No, we only accept credit cards for booking fees.
