Cultivate the joys of learning and reading while having fun at the Voelker Orth Museum’s Storybook Discovery Days! Every 2nd Saturday of the month families read and do a related art or nature activity with Karyn Mooney from 11am to noon. This month, visit for a Monster Mash in the museum to read about different monsters and make your own monster feet to wear!

Open House New York Weekend provides a rare opportunity for city-dwellers to tour the sites of some of NYC’s architectural masterpieces. Kids will love touring the Little Red Lighthouse, the hydroponic greenhouse in the Manhattan School for Children, and il laboratorio del gelato, a beloved gelato factory on the Lower East Side. Of course, the weekend wouldn’t be complete without family-friendly activities such crafts at the Children’s Museum of the Arts, drawing workshops at Kentler International Drawing Space and Woodlawn Cemetery, and scavenger hunts at the Museum of the City of New York. This event is free.
African Penguin Awareness Weekend at the New York Aquarium
Visit New York’s cutest colony of waddling wonders! The Wildlife Conservation Society’s New York Aquarium is hosting a weekend full of fun penguin-themed activities to celebrate African Penguin Awareness Day, a day dedicated to the endangered black-footed aquatic bird native to southern Africa. Visitors will be able to watch a feeding, play games, and touch penguin bio-fact materials. Since its reopening in May, the aquarium continues to recover from the damages caused by Hurricane Sandy. 10am-4pm, nyaquarium.com. Free with general zoo admission.
